Established in 2013, PNDC (formerly the Power Networks Demonstration Centre) is an established whole energy systems research, test and demonstration environment across multiple locations. With significant capability enhancement and facilities expansion, PNDC supports the development and deployment of novel energy and transport technologies through multiple collaboration models and open access facility provision for engagement with the innovation ecosystem.
Government, industrial and academic partners founded PNDC to connect key stakeholders through every stage of the deployment process and enable innovation through collaboration. We perform accelerated technology testing in a controlled, real-world environment alongside a rich portfolio of research programs across all aspects of the energy system.
At PNDC, we leverage our highly-skilled research team, academic connections with the University of Strathclyde, state-of-the-art network assets and simulation systems to bridge the gap between ideas and deployment.
Our strategic drivers previously concentrated on three primary research focus areas, namely, digital substation, control room of the future, and integrated energy systems. Along with our focus areas, we have our Core Research Programme, which consists of six areas where we apply our knowledge and expertise.
Alongside significant facilities expansion, PNDC’s research areas and capabilities are evolving to include:
Communications & Cyber Security Systems
Electrification of Transport
Grid Digitalisation
Advanced Power & Control Systems
Power Electronics Machines and Drives
Whole Energy Systems incl. heat and hydrogen
